To use the swatch gauge, simply hold the tool against your fabric and count how many stitches fit within the cut-out window. Placing the ruler over your work allows you to check both stitches and rows per inch and per centimetre. The top slot measurements are in inches, the side slot measurements are in centimetres, with the bottom window used for stitch gauge and the side window used for row gauge.
This tool also includes a wraps per inch (WPI) gauge, used to measure the thickness of yarn. While commonly used by spinners, WPI is equally helpful for knitters and crocheters when determining yarn weight and estimating gauge. On the back, clearly marked lines allow you to measure yarn against standard weights, including lace, fingering, sport, DK, worsted, bulky, and super bulky. The ruler can also be used to measure twist angle by laying your yarn along the marked guide. The bottom ruler measures in inches.
