Kelpie is a rich teal, blue and green variegated colourway. I always loved the dark folklore around Kelpies and related water horse creatures, and I definitely wanted to include a repeatable colourway inspired by them!

Kelpies would entice their victims to mount their back, then whisk them away into the water depths. There, they would devour them, and throw the entrails to the water’s edge.

When creating Kelpie, I went for the 🦇 “deep, dark, mossy pool of water (potentially-hiding-a -carnivorous-horse)” 🦇 vibe and I think we pulled it off ✨

The kelpie is usually described as a beautiful black horse inhabiting the deep pools of rivers and streams of Scotland, preying on any unfortunate humans it encounters. There’s many variations to its folklore and appearance, but one of the water-kelpie’s common characteristics is that its hooves are reversed as compared to those of a normal horse. In Aberdeenshire, the kelpie is portrayed as a horse with a mane of serpents, while the kelpie of the River Spey was white and could entice victims onto its back by singing. They could also appear in human form, but their true nature would be betrayed by water weeds stuck in their hair.

Vespertine is a super soft yarn with a gorgeous heathered texture. The heathered look of the base lends depth and richness to colours and adds an additional sophisticated flair. The fine merino fibers are reinforced with nylon for additional durability. It creates a beautiful fabric without compromising the fibre strength and washability. The yarn is therefore great for knitting soft, comfy socks or any kind of garments or accessories.

Vespertine is a term used in the life sciences to indicate something of, relating to, or occurring in the evening. In botany, a vespertine flower is one that opens or blooms in the evening. In zoology, the term is used for a creature that becomes active at dusk, such as bats and owls. Vespertine behaviour is a special case of crepuscular behaviour; while crepuscular activity may resume during the dim hours of dawn, vespertine activity is limited to dusk and ceases during full darkness.

Essential Information for buying our Hand-Dyed Yarns

When purchasing hand-dyed yarn, we recommend buying enough for your entire project.

Our yarn is handmade in small batches. While we follow precise recipes for repeatable colorways and carefully measure our materials, slight variations between skeins are inevitable. No two skeins will ever be identical, as is the nature of handcrafted products.

We take new photos for each dye lot, so images on our website may differ from skeins you’ve purchased in previous batches.

For a more uniform appearance in knitting, crochet, or weaving, alternate skeins every few rows.

We ensure all dyes are fully exhausted before rinsing our yarn. However, mild color bleeding can still occur, especially with bright, dark, or speckled skeins. To prevent unexpected color transfer, rinse your skein in cold water with wool wash and let it dry before starting your project.

For detailed care instructions, please follow this link.

This listing is for one (1) skein of yarn unless stated otherwise. Photos of multiple skeins are for comparison purposes, showcasing differences between yarn bases and/or skeins.

Please note that colorways may appear slightly different due to display settings on your device. Especially keep this in mind if you are using apple devices, which are known to alter colours. While we optimize our photography for color accuracy, viewing images on a monitor provides the most reliable representation.
