The Bogeyman Set features Dorcha as a guest base at Nocturne 🦇
The set contains five 100g skeins in rich, autumnal semi-solid colours, three in various shades of green and two accent colours in caramel brown and mustard yellow. Despite it being a non-superwash base, it takes dye beautifully and allows for even coverage, with gorgeous heathering integral to the yarn. I was inspired by a handful of typical British bogeymen, from all corners of the country:
- Grindylow: A light, Sage green. Grindylows are supernatural creatures that appear in the folklore. They are described as diminutive humanoids with scaly skin, a greenish complexion, sharp claws and teeth, and long, wiry arms with lengthy fingers at the end. They are said to dwell in ponds and marshes waiting for unsuspecting children, which they grab with their shockingly strong grip, and then drag under the surface of the waters.
- Jenny Greenteeth: A deep, Moss green. Jenny is a river-hag, she would pull children or the elderly into the water and drown them. She was often described as green-skinned, with long hair, and sharp teeth.
- Nelly Longarms: A rich, dark Olive green colourway. Nelly Longarms is a hag and water spirit in English folklore who dwells at the bottom of deep ponds, rivers and wells. Like Jenny Greenteeth, she would reach out with her long sinewy arms and drag children beneath the water if they get too close.
- Churnmilk Peg: A warm Caramel brown colourway. Churnmilk Peg in West Yorkshire was a female goblin who guarded nut thickets until they could be harvested, and would always be seen smoking a pipe. Melsh Dick was her male counterpart, and he performed the same function.
- Gooseberry Wife: A dark, Mustard yellow. The Gooseberry Wife was said to guard gooseberry bushes on the Isle of Wight, and took the form of a large hairy caterpillar.
Dorcha is a non-superwash, 33% Bluefaced Leicester, 33% Falklands Merino, 33% Zwartbles yarn base, and it is spun in the UK by John Arbon Textiles. It's a fingering weight yarn at 100g and a running length of 400 m. Dorcha is rustic, bouncy, woolly goodness, and can be used for a wide variety of projects from accessories to garments. The yarn is soft, but with a distinct heathered structure.
Dorcha means dark in Scottish Gaelic, of course referring to the deep grey natural colour of this lovely base.

Essential Information for buying our Hand-Dyed Yarns
When purchasing hand-dyed yarn, we recommend buying enough for your entire project.
Our yarn is handmade in small batches. While we follow precise recipes for repeatable colorways and carefully measure our materials, slight variations between skeins are inevitable. No two skeins will ever be identical, as is the nature of handcrafted products.
We take new photos for each dye lot, so images on our website may differ from skeins you’ve purchased in previous batches.
For a more uniform appearance in knitting, crochet, or weaving, alternate skeins every few rows.
We ensure all dyes are fully exhausted before rinsing our yarn. However, mild color bleeding can still occur, especially with bright, dark, or speckled skeins. To prevent unexpected color transfer, rinse your skein in cold water with wool wash and let it dry before starting your project.
For detailed care instructions, please follow this link.
This listing is for one (1) skein of yarn unless stated otherwise. Photos of multiple skeins are for comparison purposes, showcasing differences between yarn bases and/or skeins.
Please note that colorways may appear slightly different due to display settings on your device. Especially keep this in mind if you are using apple devices, which are known to alter colours. While we optimize our photography for color accuracy, viewing images on a monitor provides the most reliable representation.
