There, they would devour them, and throw the entrails to the water’s edge.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen creating Kelpie, I went for the 🦇 “deep, dark, mossy pool of water (potentially-hiding-a -carnivorous-horse)” 🦇 vibe and I think we pulled it off ✨\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe kelpie is usually described as a beautiful black horse inhabiting the deep pools of rivers and streams of Scotland, preying on any unfortunate humans it encounters. There’s many variations to its folklore and appearance, but one of the water-kelpie’s common characteristics is that its hooves are reversed as compared to those of a normal horse. In Aberdeenshire, the kelpie is portrayed as a horse with a mane of serpents, while the kelpie of the River Spey was white and could entice victims onto its back by singing. Because it reminded me of bonfires, I named it after the Gaelic May Day festival.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRituals were performed to protect cattle, people and crops, and to encourage growth. Special bonfires were kindled, whose flames, smoke and ashes were deemed to have protective powers. The people and their cattle would walk around or between bonfires, and sometimes leap over the flames or embers. All household fires would be doused and then re-lit from the Beltane bonfire. These gatherings would be accompanied by a feast, and some of the food and drink would be offered to the aos sí (supernatural race in the Gaelic folklore, similar to elves). The name is also used to describe pondweed or duckweed, which can form a continuous mat over the surface of a small body of water, making it misleading and potentially treacherous, especially to unwary children. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith this meaning the name is common around Liverpool and southwest Lancashire.
