These gatherings would be accompanied by a feast, and some of the food and drink would be offered to the aos sí (supernatural race in the Gaelic folklore, similar to elves). There’s many variations to its folklore and appearance, but one of the water-kelpie’s common characteristics is that its hooves are reversed as compared to those of a normal horse. In Aberdeenshire, the kelpie is portrayed as a horse with a mane of serpents, while the kelpie of the River Spey was white and could entice victims onto its back by singing.
